Dental Morelli Orthodontic NiTi Open Coil Springs Nickel-titanium (NiTi) coil springs are a relatively new addition in orthodontics, designed to produce light continuous forces. With the development of technology that can wind nickel-titanium wire, we now can apply lighter forces that act over a long time. The open coil spring is activated by compression and exerts a net pushing force in two directions away from its center. Open coil springs are mainly used for opening spaces to crowding or for the distalization of the molars. Nickel-Titanium Open Coil is very easy to manipulate compared to stainless steel coil and has ideal force properties for moving one tooth. Such applications are common in bicuspid and molar distalization cases. Typically, an extra 3-4mm of open coil may be "packed" in the interbracket space, but still, apply a very low force to the teeth. Rapid tooth movement is the result.
